A big part of drafting as a Lone Soldier is finding and maintaining your home outside of the army. While some may think they can live on base full time, this is not the case. No matter where you serve, whether you leave base every evening or once a month for the weekend, you need a proper living situation.
The army offers a number of housing options (listed in our “Lone Soldier benefits” article here). One of those options is a monthly rent stipend. There are a number of private organizations that offer structured housing programs for Lone Soldiers.
We’ve created a guide listing a number of these organizations, all of which provide their housing at a rate equivalent to the current monthly army rent stipend. Like all things, living in a program as opposed to renting your own apartment has its pros and cons. Advantages include: Fewer expenses, additional services provided (depending on the program), and support from the organization if needed. Disadvantages can include: Location determined in advance, less privacy (depending on the program), and less overall control (for example- program rules that must be followed). All these attributes can be taken subjectively as positives or negatives, and should be taken into account when deciding where to live.
A few things to note before continuing:
- Many organizations will allow you to move in pre-draft if you have received an official draft date within the next three months.
- These housing programs may be at capacity. While they most likely have a waiting list you can join, reach out directly before setting your mind on any one in particular.
- The organizations running the housing programs require you to pass an interview. Acceptance is easier for some than others, but never guaranteed. They have the ability to say no to you if they do choose.
- Every organization caters to a different clientele within the Lone Soldier community. Make sure you find the organization that suits you and your needs.
