13 Tips For Excelling In Michve Alon

  1. Bring a water bottle and if your drafting in the winter it’s good to bring a thermos too
  2. Bring extra socks and underwear. You can never have enough.
  3. Bring a small notebook and pen to write down the new words you learn. This is an excellent way to improve your Hebrew.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions or for the translation of words when need be. Try to study your words during breaks & use the words throughout the day.
  1. Brings small snacks to put in your pocket
  2. Join kosher kravi/כושר קרבי (“combat fitness” training group) in the mornings. This is a great way to talk to different people who are not in your tzevet and get an extra workout that does not take up your שעת ת”ש (hour of free time given every night before curfew).
  3. Volunteer for everything
  4. Make an effort to speak to everyone, not just the people that speak the same language as you. Make sure you talk in Hebrew with friends at meals and breaks. You learn the most by talking in Hebrew and this is your chance because everyone in מחווה אלון is on the same page so no need to be embarrassed of your accent or shy.
  5. If you’re drafting in the winter bring hot packets, a black beanie and gloves. Winters are cold in מחווה.
  6. Bring headphones and portable charger (there are never enough outlets).
  7.  Bring a carabiner to attach stuff to your pants. You’ll understand this once you draft.
  8. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. The commanders are there to help you succeed.
  •  Talk to your tzevet (team) about what’s going on. You are not alone. A lot of time people are struggling with the same things and you can help each other out.
  1. Remember to have fun. Sometimes people only think about the end goal of getting a good job in the army or a high Hebrew score but forget to enjoy the time they have in מחווה. Don’t forget מחווה is a present from the army. Don’t just let the time slip away.
  2. Be positive. Sometimes things can get tough but if you try to find a positive about it, it will be a lot easier to get through.
